The UNSW SMaRT Centre has led a section of a CSIRO-hosted program for university students and postdoctoral researchers to learn about the latest research for sustainable plastics products.

The program hosted 40 graduate student and postdoctoral researchers from the US, Australia and New Zealand to gain ‘Beyond the Classroom’ STEM education in a global setting, with SMaRT hosting the first week of the program.

The aim of PELICANS is to inspire and shape the next generation of sustainability researchers and leaders. The two-week program provided hands on experience of circular economy principles and connected students with experts in the field.

PELICANS stands for Plastic in the Environment: Leaders and Innovators Collaborating from Australia, New Zealand, and United States.

The two-week forum covered the latest research for sustainable products and included a plethora of experiences to spark curiosity and innovation.

The PELICANS research forum was hosted in partnership with the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers, Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), Monash University, the UNSW SMaRT Centre and University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
