Recyling agricultural waste in ferrous processing to reduce carbon footprint for industry
The project aims to create the fundamental science for innovative recycling of lignocellulosic agricultural waste for iron oxide reduction at steelmaking temperatures (1550-1650°C). This research will reduce the carbon foot-print of ferrous industries by replacing coal-based reductants with renewable carbon neutral agricultural waste. PO Microbiogen will extract ethanol from inedible agricultural waste, and lignin waste produced as a by-product will be utilized in steelmaking as iron oxide reductant. Mechanisms of iron oxide reduction will be established in the simultaneous presence of solid and gaseous reductants; metal productivity and waste recycling will be optimized through extensive industrial trials and iterative feedback loops.
