Emeritus Professor Oleg Ostovski has received BE, PhD and DSc degrees from Moscow Steel and Alloys Institute. His area of research is pyrometallurgy, environmental issues, technology, thermodynamics and kinetics of metallurgical processes. He took an academic position with UNSW in 1993; HOS in 2004-2007; and ARC Professorial Fellow in 2007-2012. Oleg's major contributions are in the field of pyrometallurgical technologies for minerals processing, iron, steel, and ferroalloy-making. Areas of research include thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of metallurgical reactions; properties of molten metals and slags; reduction, smelting and refining processes, environmental issues in pyrometallurgy. From 2010 to 2015 he published 41 papers in international journals and 26 papers in conference proceedings; ARC research funding (Discovery and Linkage projects) exceeded $2.2m; and 10 PhD projects were completed.
